It's Not a Chatbot. It's a System Built Around How You Work.
When most people hear "AI app," they picture a chatbot that answers basic questions and gets things wrong half the time. That's not what I build. As an AI app developer Scotland businesses are starting to find through word of mouth, I spend most of my time building tools that replace actual manual work — the spreadsheets nobody wants to maintain, the follow-up emails that never get sent, the admin that falls through the cracks every single week.
A recent project is a good example. A hospitality business on the west coast needed a way to pull in industry briefings, surface relevant content automatically, and give their team a live feed they could actually act on — without hiring someone to curate it full-time. We built exactly that: a Netlify function that syncs on a schedule, a Supabase backend storing and structuring the data, and a clean React front end their team opens every morning. Claude handles the interpretation layer. The whole thing runs without anyone touching it.
That's the kind of work I do. Not demos. Not proof of concepts that sit in a drawer. Deployed, working software.
Why the Stack Matters for Scottish SMEs
I work with React, Supabase, Netlify and the Claude API for a reason. This stack is lean, maintainable, and doesn't require an enterprise IT budget to run. For a Scottish SME — whether that's a clinic in Ayrshire, a law firm in Glasgow, or a trade business in Fife — it means:
- No expensive infrastructure. Supabase and Netlify scale with you, and you're not paying for servers you don't need yet.
- Real ownership. You get the codebase. It's yours. You're not locked into a SaaS platform that can change its pricing whenever it likes.
- Fast iteration. When your process changes, the app changes with it. I'm not rebuilding from scratch — I'm adjusting a system we designed to be flexible.
I'm also building tools for my own studio operations as I go — a CRM with outreach tracking, an email integration that reads and drafts through Zoho Mail, internal dashboards for managing active client projects. If I'm recommending a system to a client, I've usually already built a version of it myself and lived with it for a few months. That matters when you're asking someone to trust you with their actual business workflow.
What "Custom" Actually Means in Practice
Off-the-shelf AI tools are fine for generic tasks. But the moment your business has a specific process — a particular way you qualify leads, a reporting format your team expects, a data source that's unique to your industry — generic tools start costing you time instead of saving it.
As an AI app developer Scotland has a shortage of right now, I'm not trying to sell you a template. I want to understand what your team does every day, find the part that's eating the most time for the least value, and build something that handles it reliably. That's the whole job.
